The Government of Mexico City, through the Secretariat of Government, announced that more than 350,000 people gathered at an informative assembly led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in the capital's Zócalo. The event, held on Sunday, March 9, 2025, took place peacefully and without incidents, culminating in a clean slate.
The assembly started at 12:00 PM, although various groups began arriving in the city center from 6:00 AM to participate in the event. During the day, there were elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Civil Protection present to ensure the safety and well-being of the attendees.
In her speech, President Sheinbaum highlighted the success achieved with U.S. President Donald Trump to temporarily postpone the 25% tariffs on Mexican products according to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is valid until April 2. Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration between citizens and the government, describing the achievement as one for all present.
"This is a collective victory that shows that when we work together, we can achieve great things," expressed the president before the crowd gathered at the Plaza de la Constitución. The assembly was called by Sheinbaum on March 4, in response to the temporary tariffs imposed by the United States on Mexican exports.
Sheinbaum initially planned to present "tariff and non-tariff" measures during the Sunday event, but after the postponement of the implementation of the tariffs until April 2, the president decided to turn the assembly into a festive celebration to mark the agreement reached with Trump, without addressing the possible countermeasures the Mexican government was preparing.
"We do not believe that tariffs are necessary," the president stated earlier in a video shared on her social media on March 5, highlighting the importance of the agreement as a joint achievement.
